Today is the International Day of Peace, a day set aside by the United Nations to lay down weapons and set aside differences in favor of embracing peace. This annual celebration, also referred to as World Peace Day, was first celebrated thirty-three years ago in 1982.
What could be more important or far reaching than World Peace? I’m not necessarily talking about the idealistic image of all nations working side-by-side in friendship, though I think that would be wonderful. I’m really talking about peace and friendship as it refers to everyday people. People like you and me.
There’s so much hate and distrust in the world now, and it’s time we made a decision as individuals: Will we be part of the problem, or part of the solution? It’s an easy decision, and it starts with kindness.
- Love one another…
- Be kind to others…
- Treat others the way you wish to be treated…
- Put yourself in someone else’s shoes before casting judgement…
These are all things we strive to teach our children. But do we lead by example, or do we follow the credo of “Do as I say, not as I do?”
Kindness starts with a simple act. It starts with a smile or a helping hand. It starts with you, and it starts with me.
Take a moment today to celebrate International Day of Peace by extending yourself in kindness and understanding to another person. For more information about this annual event, you can visit the United Nations website, or the Facebook Page dedicated to this event.
