Today is bittersweet. It’s a day I’ve both longed for and dreaded, and yet a day that I wouldn’t change for anything on earth. Today my beautiful girl leaves childhood behind and enters the world of a fully-fledged adult. Today my Amber turns twenty-one.
On March 22, 1996 at 4:19 p.m., my beautiful girl was brought into this world by caesarean
section. At 7 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces, she was a tiny little thing; but oh boy did that child have a set of lungs! Since then, those powerful lungs have been used to sing, laugh, cry, and argue. But most importantly, over the years, her voice has been raised in defense of those she loves, and to stand tall for all that is right and true.
To all who know her, Amber is the truest and most loyal of friends. She will defend you to a fault, and stand with you at your lowest moment. When you need her, she will drop everything to be there for you. She is the friend we all wish we had, and yet so few of us are lucky enough to claim the type of steadfast loyalty she brings to every relationship.
Simply stated, I’m so incredibly proud of the young woman she has become, and even more proud to be her mom. God has certainly blessed our family.
Because this is her last “big birthday” and she’s leaving childhood behind, please humor me while I embarrass her for what (she hopes) is the last time ever. Enjoy some of the moments of joy that this special girl has brought to our lives throughout these last 21 years.
